Nintendo Switch 2 Sold Three Times More Than Switch And Past Consoles At Launch In Japan

Famitsu has shared their weekly sales rankings for the week of June 2 to June 8, 2025 in Japan.

Sales data from the Japanese publication revealed a massive, unprecedented launch for Nintendo Switch 2 – the console sold a whopping 947,931 units at launch, with Mario Kart World selling 782,566 units. Keep in mind sales of the Mario Kart World bundle are included with the overall software sales for the game.

To put things in perspective, Nintendo Switch 2’s massive 947,931 units launch is almost three times of that of the Nintendo Switch launch (330,637 units) in Japan. It also handily beaten all other Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles released in the past. Mario Kart World has become the bestselling Mario Kart title at launch in Japan, beating Mario Kart Wii’s 608,147 unit record.

It’s currently unclear whether Famitsu’s sales estimates include sales from My Nintendo Store, which many estimate to have made up a significant portion of sales in Japan. We will only find out after Nintendo releases a regional breakdown in the coming months.
