Here’s some unsettling news on the homebrew scene to start the day.
Today a team of hackers known as Team Xecuter have come forward saying they are releasing a hack on Nintendo Switch in Spring 2018. Team Xecuter claims this hack will work on all firmware versions of the Switch.
Why is this a worrying development? Unlike other hackers in the homebrew scene, Team Xecuter has been historically known for opening up systems to piracy. As such some hackers have already declared they will not be using Team Xecuter’s solution. After all, there has always been a strong divide between the homebrew and piracy communities.
If the Nintendo Switch is cracked open to pirates, video game developers and publishers would be greatly affected as they would see their earnings drop from lost customers. This would in turn lead to a decrease in support on the Switch from third parties and indies, so this is certainly not good news for everyone.
Check out Team Xecuter’s proof of concept video and their original statement below.
This solution will work on ANY Nintendo Switch console regardless of the currently installed firmware, and will be completely future proof. This is *the* solution for opening up CFW (Custom FirmWare) on the Nintendo Switch. We want to move the community forward and provide a persistent, stable and fast method of running your own code and custom firmware patches on Nintendo’s latest flagship product. And we think we’ve succeeded!

Is this kind of thing punishable by law? Would Nintendo be able to sue these people and be able to stop them from distributing the “hack”? I don’t mind if this kind of thing happens when a console is not manufactured anymore, giving fans a way to enjoy the games they weren’t able to enjoy during the console’s life cicle. Doing this with a console that doesn’t even is on the market for 1 year is just pathetic. Way to ruin the fun for everyone. If people have money to buy a Switch they have the money for the games.
Sadly, this has happened before. The DS had flash carts out in less than a year's time and courts ruled those were illegal and most sellers went underground. Still didn't stop those like us who bought and used them.
