For the past few days, a very strange battle matchup has been trending on Twitter, inspiring a flurry of fan-art and memes.
On January 16th, 2023, Twitter user @GirlSephiroth started a long “VS Thread” on Twitter, which suggests different battle matchups between various characters, encouraging users to imagine and comment who they think would win. Among the lineups proposed was one featuring the Super Mario brothers Mario & Luigi, with their opponent being the infamous Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII.
For some inexplicable reason, this matchup in particular went extremely viral, accumulating millions of views, over 14K likes, and over 2K retweets. Many fans believed that Mario & Luigi would easily defeat Sephiroth, usually through using the absurd Bros. Attacks featured in the Mario & Luigi series.
In the days that followed, Mario & Luigi’s battle against Sephiroth became a hotly trending topic on Twitter, through a flood of memes and fanart depicting how the fight would go.
