Amidst the ongoing Pokemon World Championships, the official Pokemon X/Twitter account was hacked.

For a brief half an hour, fans were bewildered to discover the official Pokemon X/Twitter account posting an ad for “$Pokemon, the official Pokemon memecoin” in celebration of the franchise’s 30th anniversary. Memecoins are a type of cryptocurrency often associated with hackers, who would gain access to high profile social media accounts and promote cryptocurrency, hoping to trick unsuspecting followers into buying in.

Sure enough, the Pokemon Company quickly regained access to the account, deleted the post, and shared the following message explaining the situation:

The Pokemon handle on X was temporarily compromised earlier for ~30 minutes. We’re aware that our X account was accessed without authorization and used to publish posts promoting a cryptocurrency. Those posts were not created or approved by Pokémon and have been removed. We have secured the account and are investigating the incident. We’re sorry for the confusion and appreciate your patience.
