Yesterday, on February 29th 2024, a Leap Day added to the month every four years, players of the Final Fantasy spin-off Theatrhythm Final Bar Line experienced a very strange bug.
On that day, numerous players discovered that Theatrhythm Final Bar Line refused to load, getting stuck on a connection screen failing to link to Square Enix’s servers. After some trial and error, it was discovered that this bug was tied to the date of February 29th, as players were able to log back into the game by changing their console’s date setting to any other day of the year. Confusingly, the game does not require an online connection for regular gameplay, so it is not known why this server connection is necessary in the first place.
At the time of this writing, Square Enix has yet to acknowledge the existence of this bug. That said, it seems unlikely that Square Enix will take any prompt action, as the bug will technically resolve itself by the following day, and won’t become a problem again for another four years. Stay tuned for more updates as they come.
