Nintendo has reportedly filed two new patents for AI Upscaling Methods according to Free Patents Online.
According to the listings, the patents are for “SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR MACHINE LEARNED IMAGE CONVERSION”, which apparently refer to AI Upscaling methods similar to that used by Nvidia’s DLSS and Intel’s XeSS. These patents also state that these methods can be ” accelerated by matrix multiplication hardware” similar to Nvidia’s Tensor Cores.
Links to the patents can be found here and here, although Nintendo has reportedly not been granted the patents at the time of this writing.
This news comes shortly after Nintendo denied rumors that they had sent out 4k Switch dev kits to developers, although it is unknown if these patents are related. We will be sure to report back with more details should they become available.
