Rumor: Pokemon Sleep Patent Seemingly Discovered Online

Back in 2019, The Pokemon Company announced Pokemon Sleep, a mysterious app that would supposedly track players’ sleep patterns and translate it into some kind of gameplay.

In the years that followed, The Pokemon Company shared nearly zero updates about the app, leading it to become somewhat infamous in the Pokemon community. Many believe the project had been scrapped or abandoned, while others remain hopeful about its eventual arrival, if only to satisfy their curiosity about what exactly it was supposed to be.

Recently, Reddit user milotic03 reported an interesting discovery relating to the game. While randomly visiting the pokemonsleep.com website, they were apparently redirected to a patent document dated November 2022 and published by The Pokemon Company. Although the link has seemingly been corrected, milotic03 uploaded a mirror of the alleged document which can be found here.

While the patent does not mention Pokemon Sleep explicitly, it described a number of features similar to that game’s concept, even including images of franchise mascot Pikachu illustrating a levelling mechanic:

A user breeds a virtual life form by practicing good sleep habits and stays motivated toward practicing good sleep habits while enjoying breeding the virtual life form

This is not the first time the pokemonsleep.com website has redirected to something strange, as back in 2020 the site was updated to link to an episode of the Pokemon anime starring Jigglypuff, although it seems this too was eventually changed. Even so, many fans remain skeptical about this patent, with some questioning whether the domain name was still owned by the Pokemon Company, and if the patent might have been part of an elaborate trolling attempt.

Until an official statement is released by The Pokemon Company, the status of Pokemon Sleep will likely remain up in the air and debated by fans. We will be sure to report back with more info as it comes.
