Ryan Reynolds Recorded Borderline R-Rated Dialog For Detective Pikachu Which Was Later Cut

During his interview with Comicbook.com, Ryan Reynolds discussed his experience recording lines for Detective Pikachu, and what was left on the cutting room floor.

Before Detective Pikachu, one of Reynolds’ most famous roles was that of the foul-mouthed mutant mercenary Deadpool, a film which made a name for itself as a decidedly R-rated superhero film. Naturally, Reynolds had to tone a lot of that crude humor down for the more kid-friendly Pokemon movie, giving a more tame but still pretty snarky performance as Pikachu.

That said, some of the material Reynolds recorded for the character did end up skirting too close to the R-rated boundary, and was left out of the film as a result.

“…it’s motion capture, so it’s all imagination. You go into a room, I’m alone basically…and then it’s just throwing like 800 versions of any joke or any moment up against a wall and leaving it to some poor editor to sort of figure out…Some things would come out a little PG-13, bordering on Rated R. That stuff didn’t make it.

Even so, Reynolds seemed quite satisfied with the jokes that did make it into the movie, mentioning that the franchise’s deep setting and wide fanbase allowed him crack jokes which appealed to adults as well as children.

“The great thing about this world is that you can be totally edgy and totally push it, and still stay within the boundaries of a movie that you can take little kids to and adults. That was the trick.”

The Detective Pikachu movie is showing in theaters now in Japan, and will premier in the West 10 May 2019.
