Sakurai: King K. Rool Was Very Popular On The Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot

In the latest Famitsu column, Masahiro Sakurai talked about the recent Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct held earlier this month.

One of the things Sakurai discussed was King K. Rool, the villain of the Donkey Kong series. Sakurai revealed that King K. Rool was a very popular character in the Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot held in 2015 for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U. This likely means King K. Rool’s popularity in the ballot was taken into account when deciding to include him in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

In order to make King K. Rool “King K. Rool-esque”, the Smash Bros. director had to ensure the villain is standing tall and upright. Due to size restrictions in the game, King K. Rool is smaller than his actual size.

Other than King K. Rool, Sakurai talked about the ability to change the Final Smash setting to meter. He feels this is better suited for casual players. Finally, Sakurai says while many stages from the previous games have been ported to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, it takes a “considerable amount of work” to update the graphics, with some stages taking up to a year.
