SEGA: We Would Like To Take Good Care Of Both 2D And 3D Sonic Games In The Future

For the Sonic the Hedgehog community, the gap between his classic 2D-platforming roots and more mixed modern outings have often been a source of contention – with many arguing about which style of gameplay would be better for the blue blue’s next adventure. As the character approaches his 30th birthday, however, it looks like SEGA is still keen on keeping both types of fans happy.

In a recent interview with Otaquest, head of Sonic Team Takashi Iizuka discussed more about the future direction of the Sonic videogames. When asked specifically about the seeming divide between fans of 2D and 3D Sonic games, Iizuka emphasized SEGA’s commitment to fans of the two genres:

“Not much time has passed since the distinction between “classic” and “modern” was made, in fact, it was since 2011’s “Sonic Generations” title. Even before that, in addition to the main 3D series, there was a high demand for the 2D action games such as the Sonic Advance series, so we revived the old Sonic as Classic Sonic for the 20th-anniversary title, Sonic Generations. We initially thought that it would be a 20th Anniversary project only, however after that we had a strong demand for a new classic Sonic standalone title, that became 2017’s Sonic Mania. We would like to take good care of these two very popular iterations of Sonic’s in the future.”

What do you think? Would you prefer Sonic’s next game to have 2D or 3D gameplay? Feel free to share your thoughts below!
