Earlier this year, Nintendo announced that a sequel to the Super Mario Bros. Movie is in the works, with plans to release in 2026.
In an interview with Men’s Journal, Toad’s movie voice actor Keegan-Michael Key spoke a bit about what fans can expect in the sequel. According to Key, the second Super Mario Bros. movie will broader in scope and feature new characters that are “old favorites” and “really deep cuts”.
“I feel like what they’ve done creatively is they’ve really widened out the universe that these characters live in and we’re going to meet some new folks. We’re going to meet some new folks that are old favorites and some folks that I think are really deep cuts, but because of the way the story’s laying itself out right now, those characters are going to be very intriguing.”
Back in March, some concept art for the first film surfaced online, featuring cut characters such as Princess Daisy, Toadsworth, Yoshi, and more. It seems quite likely that some of these characters might be who Key is talking about, although we will have to wait for more information to know for sure.
