During the full Switch 2 reveal, Nintendo announced Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games, upgraded versions of Switch 1 titles with better performance and new features for Switch 2. Nintendo Switch 2 Editions can be purchased as standalone Switch 2 titles, or be obtained by purchasing an “upgrade pack” for the Switch 1 version.
In the case of the latter, fans might be wondering if they can still play their upgraded game on the Switch 1 if they so choose. According to Nintendo’s official site, the answer to that question is “Yes”. However, as you may expect, players will not be able to experience any of the Switch 2 exclusive features or performance enhancements on the Switch 1.
If you already have the original Nintendo Switch game—as either a physical or digital version—you can upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition by purchasing the game’s upgrade pack from Nintendo eShop, My Nintendo Store, or retailers.
After you upgrade, the original Nintendo Switch game can still be played on Nintendo Switch, though the features and content of the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition can only be played on Nintendo Switch 2.
