Switch Sales Momentum Rivalling Wii As Nintendo Discusses Plans To Keep It

The Wii is Nintendo’s best selling home console, but matching its sales momentum is its younger brother the Nintendo Switch. Having started off with a good foot, the Nintendo Switch is now rivalling the Wii in its sales pace.

Speaking with Mainichi, Nintendo President, Tatsumi Kimishima said that although the Switch got off to a great first year, the console’s second year was just as important. As previously reported, Kimishima has placed a target of 20 Million Switch sales for the consoles’s second year.

He plans to meet the target by reaching out to not just gamers but also non-gamers, much like the Wii did when it found itself in places like retirement homes and physiotheraphy wards.

“In order to be playable in the long term, the second year is crucial. Our task is to add more users, including people who barely touch game consoles.” He also said Nintendo has to expand the game library, take in new players, and raise the Switch as “a game console with long lifespan.”

Kimishima also said harked the importance of third-party support as they help cater to different gamers, expanding the user base. He even welcomed other companies to create game consoles that are more interesting than the Switch itself so that Nintendo can continue its drive for creating new and novel ways to game.

Nintendo is sure hard at work for a strong year 2. Although the full lineup of 2018’s Switch hits has yet to be unveiled, excellent games such as Dark Souls and Hyrule Warriors are already on the way to the Switch. Hopefully, the surprises don’t end there.
