Earlier this year, the Super Mario Galaxy movie was released, quickly becoming one of the highest grossing animated films of all time.
Unsurprisingly, it seems the team is already looking ahead towards making a third film in the series. In an interview with ScreenRant, Keegan-Michael Key, who voices Toad in the films, hinted that the next movie will likely take until 2029 to release, due to the filmmakers wanting to “get it right”.
“We want to get it right. We want to get everything right. We want to get all the details right. And Michael and Aaron, who are our directors, have a real passion for this. I think they’re as passionate about these projects as the audience is. And so we got to get it right, we got to get it right. So I apologize. But it’ll be worth the wait. It’ll be worth the wait…’29 is better than sometime, right?”
A three year wait between films seems about right, given that there was also a three year gap between the Super Mario Bros. Movie and the Super Mario Galaxy Movie. That said, it is likely that we won’t officially hear about the third film for quite some time. Stay tuned for more updates as they come.
