Why Dragon Quest XI Doesn’t Have DLC

Critically acclaimed game Dragon Quest XI is one of the few big titles that didn’t come with DLC or microtransactions. Why is that the case?

In an USGamer interview with Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii, Horii explained his team wanted to “return to the roots of the series” where players simply purchase one game, and that’s it – that’s all you have to buy.

Check out his full comments below:

Dragon Quest XI is a very big game that took a lot of money to develop, so we looked into a lot of different ways of making money back on it. But in the end, there’s that ‘return to the roots of the series’ idea. We thought in this current climate of all these games having microtransactions, we really wanted to go back to the idea of having one game you buy, and that’s it.

Dragon Quest XI is planned to launch on Nintendo Switch in the future. It’s currently available on Nintendo 3DS in Japan.
