Last year, there were numerous rumors and speculation that the successor to the Nintendo Switch would be coming soon, specifically sometime this year in 2024.
In the most recent edition of gamesindustry.biz’ annual analyst predictions, Dr. Serkan Toto, one of the most respected industry analysts in the video game industry, shared his predictions about this hypothetical “Switch 2”. Toto believes that the Switch 2 will be an “iteration” of the handheld hybrid that has brought Nintendo so much success over the past several years, with additional features, a $400 price point, and more expensive games.
The time is finally here for a Switch successor, even though I can say a “Pro” model actually did exist and certain developers were already working with the dev kit. I believe the next hardware will drop next year for $400. There is a high chance that games will cost more, too: $70. The next system is also likely to be an iteration rather than a revolution. Nintendo might add some bells and whistles to the device, but it will be similar to the current Switch.
Interestingly, he also cites Pokemon as a major reason why Nintendo will keep the Switch mostly as is, due to the series being “associated with handheld”.
And because there is Pokémon, and Pokémon is associated with handheld gaming, there is no way on earth Nintendo will drop the portability feature for their next big thing.
Although Nintendo has yet to make any official announcement regarding the Switch’s successor, 2024 is just beginning, and we will surely hear more if there is any truth to the rumors and speculation. Stay tuned for more updates as they come.
