Ever since it was officially revealed last week, Sonic’s live-action movie design has been a hot topic of discussion. Cory Barlog, creative director of the most recent God of War game is one of the latest to share his take, but its a little different from what has been said so far.
While many have been rejoicing over the filmmakers’ decision to change the design after the overwhelming backlash, Barlog’s feelings about the situation are a bit more conflicted. Although he does agree that its important to respect the opinions of fans, he expressed concern that the move may discourage creators from experimenting with well-known properties. As proven by games such as Breath of the Wild and Barlog’s own God of War reboot, change that may seem too drastic at first could lead to something great if given the chance.
While Barlog makes a good point, its probably not going to sway the fans unhappy about the original design, especially since Sonic’s own creator wasn’t pleased with how he looks. Unlike with Zelda & God of War, the changes made to Sonic just don’t come across as having franchise’s best interests at heart, though it remains to be seen just how much his appearance will be tweaked in response to the criticisms.
