On this day 30 years ago, Nintendo released one of the bestselling home consoles of all time – the Game Boy.
The Game Boy was released in Japan on April 21, 1989. It played 8-bit games with a dull green screen. Although it was less powerful than other handheld consoles out in the market, the Game Boy managed to sell a whopping 118 million systems worldwide.
The reason behind the Game Boy’s success was its huge library of wonderful games. Titles such as Super Mario Land, Pokemon Red/Blue, and Tetris were huge hits among consumers. The Game Boy was also a cheap yet durable consumer product that could be played for over 30 hours before the battery died.
