Here’s What The Numbers On Pokemon Sword & Shield Gym Leaders’ Outfits Mean

The Pokemon Company has just released a brand new trailer for Pokemon Sword and Shield revealing two new Gym Leaders along with their numbered outfits.

We have previously noted these details from past Pokemon Direct footage where the main character’s shirts bear the numbers reflecting the  specific dates these Directs were previously released. A previous tweet also pointed out Gym Leader Milo’s jersey shirt bearing the number “831” which has been speculated as the next Pokemon Direct’s air date.

However, this does not seem to be the case with the Gym Leaders’ numbered outfits as pointed out by a new Twitter post. According to a retweeted post by Twitter user @canicuIa, these numbers are all Japanese puns related to the Gym Leaders’ trainer types.

In particular:

831 can be read as “yasai”/vegetable = grass

049 = “oyogu”/swim = water

193 = “ikusa”/war = fighting

291 = “nikui”/hateful = ghost

Additionally, the main character’s latest outfit shows a number reflecting the July 8 Pokemon Sword and Shield trailer.
