It looks like major development studios in Japan just can’t get a break nowadays.
40-year-old Kenichi Hiratsuka was recently arrested after he made violent threats against none other than Square Enix. In particular, he made posts such as the following through the company’s main website:
“Give me back my money from your sh*t game…Do you want a repeat of Kyoto Animation?”
If you’ve been out of the loop, a terrible tragedy struck Kyoto Animation last month – which caused the deaths of 35 staff and prominent anime directors. Namely, an independent novelist set fire to the anime studio and its employees, while claiming that they stole his ideas.
When asked why he made a similar threat to Square-Enix, Hiratsuka told the Toyko Metropolitan Police that “I was pissed off at losing in a game, so I sent the mail”.
It is currently not clear which game Hiratsuka was angry about. We’ll report back if this story happens to develop any further.
