Huge news in Japan – Niigata prefecture police have arrested a salary man in his 30s under the Unfair Competition Prevention Law for unlawful modification of software.
This is the first time a person has been arrested for modifying video game software in Japan. Last year, the Diet passed an act to make modification of video game hardware and software illegal under the Unfair Competition Prevention Law.
According to The Yomiuri Shimbun, in January 2019, the man made 10,000 yen after modifying two Pokemon Nintendo 3DS games for customers. The man said it was hard to quit providing these services as he was turning a profit. The court fined the man 300,000 yen.
The report also states the man modified the Pokemon games by making changes to the Pokemon data in the game, giving players an unfair advantage over others.

UPDATE: Corrected the amount of yen.
