Last month, gamers everywhere were re-introduced to Gooigi, a slime-based copy of Luigi that plays an integral role in Luigi’s Mansion 3.
In an interview with The Verge, Luigi’s Mansion 3 producers Yoshihito Ikebata and Kensuke Tanabe shared more details about where Gooigi came from as well as his role in the game.
Speaking about Gooigi’s first appearance in last year’s Luigi’s Mansion re-release on 3DS, Ikebata confirmed that it was meant to be a tease for the character’s role in Luigi’s Mansion 3.
Ikebata: “I wanted to put Gooigi in the 3DS version with no explanation whatsoever, my hope was people would see him and be like: ‘What is this?’”
Elaborating further about Gooigi’s origins, Tanabe revealed that Gooigi is composed of “energy extracted from ghosts” that was brought to life when Professor E.Gadd spilled coffee on that energy. As a result, Tanabe believes that the goo “probably tastes like coffee”.
Next, Ikebata and Tanabe also shared more details about the interactions between Luigi and Gooigi in Luigi’s Mansion 3. As seen during the E3 direct, players alternate between controlling Luigi and Gooigi to use their unique skills to navigate the hotel, with Luigi falling limp whenever players are using Gooigi. While Tanabe says that Luigi is simply knocked out, Ikebata believes that “the essence of Luigi is sending Gooigi directions.”
In addition, Tanabe also talked about the game’s emphasis on comedy, and that it can sometimes be hard to pull it off in a game. However, he believes that the comedy works out well in Luigi’s Mansion 3, mostly because of the game’s cowardly star.
“We might think it’s fun, but then we put it in and people might get confused. So we kind of jam-packed the game with all kinds of reactions by Luigi, and we hope that at least some of them hit the mark. Luigi really helps with that.”
Finally, when asked about whether Gooigi could get his own spin-off if Luigi’s Mansion 3 sells well, Tanabe had this to say:
“There might be a Gooigi-only spinoff perhaps, with all different colors, Gooigi Power Rangers.”
Luigi’s Mansion 3 is scheduled to launch sometime in 2019.
