Despite initial reservations, the Minecraft movie has set a new record for videogame adaptation movies in the west.
According to reports, the film achieved a domestic US opening of $157 Million, breaking the record set by the Super Mario Bros. Movie, which had a domestic opening of $146.4. Minecraft‘s worldwide opening was similarly massive, earning $301 million over the weekend, although it did not manage to surpass Mario‘s $377 million worldwide earnings.
This achievement is likely due to the extreme popularity of Minecraft around the world, enough for fans to push past any negatives about the film leading up to its release. However, whether it will be able to keep up this momentum in the coming days remains to be seen.
