With the rise of easily accessible AI Generation tools, its use in videogame production has become a hot topic of discussion in recent years. Many believe that it will inevitably become commonplace, while others push back saying that it cannot and should not be used in place of real artists.
Nintendo however, appears to be skipping out on the trend. In an interview with The New York Times, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto briefly approached the topic of AI, saying that Nintendo would rather “go in a different direction” from the rest of the industry. The implication being that the company would not be embracing those tools like their contemporaries.
“It might seem like we are just going the opposite direction for the sake of going in the opposite direction, but it really is trying to find what makes Nintendo special. There is a lot of talk about A.I., for example. When that happens, everyone starts to go in the same direction, but that is where Nintendo would rather go in a different direction.”
Miyamoto’s statement echoes sentiments shared by Nintendo’s current president Shuntaro Furukawa about AI. In a recent shareholders meeting, Furukawa acknowledged the potential of AI, but also mentioned concerns over intellectual property rights. He closed off by saying Nintendo would focus on “delivering value that is unique to Nintendo and cannot be created by technology alone.”
