NPD has released the gaming industry statistics for August 2018 and it has shed quite a bit of light on Nintendo’s amazing return to form after their Wii U blunder.
According to NPD’s statistics, the Nintendo Switch has seen a year-over-year sales growth but it wasn’t alone. Nintendo’s retro console, the NES Classic also saw year-over-year growths.
In fact, Nintendo home consoles (NES, SNES Classic included) helped drive part of plug-and-play console’s 400% yearly growth, as Nintendo made comparable sales to that of the PlayStation and Xbox. This makes it Nintendo’s strongest year since 2011*.
As for popular games on the Switch, here’s NPD’s ranking for Switch and 3DS games:

- Mario Kart 8
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- Super Mario Odyssey
- Monster Hunter: Generations Ultiamte
