Last year, developer PocketPair released Palworld, a monster taming survival crafting game that took the gaming community by storm, with many attributing its success to the similarities it had with Pokemon.
Speaking to IGN’s Rebekah Valentine at GDC, Palworld communications director John “Bucky” Buckley was asked whether the game could ever come to Switch, the current platform for Pokemon games. According to Buckley, a beefy game like Palworld probably work on the Switch 1, but the a Switch 2 port is “100% worth considering” if the specs are there.
“If we could make the game work on the Switch, we would, but Palworld is a beefy game.”
“We haven’t seen those [Switch 2] specs yet. Like everyone else, we’re waiting. I’m walking around GDC hoping someone will tell me them, but everyone I’ve spoken to says they haven’t even seen them.”
“If it’s beefy enough, it’s 100% worth considering. We did a lot of optimization for Steam Deck, which we were really happy with. Still work to do, but we’re really happy with how it turned out. So we would like to get it on more handhelds if possible.”
Interestingly, Buckley said this despite PocketPair being embroiled in an ongoing lawsuit with Nintendo over Palworld, which he described as being “disappointing” separately at GDC. While it could just be PR speak, it’s also possible that the company doesn’t see the lawsuit as a big obstacle to getting Palworld on Switch 2, given that they already released one of their other games on the Switch 1. Whether Nintendo feels otherwise remains to be seen.
