Earlier this year, The Pokemon Company confirmed that the Pokemon World Championships would be returning in 2022, after being put on pause for the two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Unfortunately, this year will be the last time that the Pokemon fighting game Pokken Tournament will be featured at the event. The game had previously made appearances at the 2016 World Championships after its WiiU release, and every year since then after its launch on Switch as Pokken Tournament DX.
The removal of Pokken Tournament from the Championships series is perhaps unsurprising, given that the game has seen little support over the past few years. That said, some fans have expressed hope that this move could also be a hint that a sequel is on its way, although no such plans have been announced by The Pokemon Company, or the game’s developer Bandai Namco.
