Over the past 25 years, the Pokemon family has grown to include hundreds of different species of all manner of shapes and sizes, inspired not only by existing animals, but also mythological creatures and even household objects.
If you have ever wondered how real-world scientists might have tried to classify each Pokemon based on actual theories of evolution, Reddit user u/TheVomcher recently posted a complete phylogenetic “Tree of Life” that tries to chart out some possible evolutionary relationships between every Pokemon up to Generation 8’s DLC, including Legendaries and alternate forms.
TheVomcher’s tree was originally based on/inspired by a similar work by u/anivasiq, and is remarkably detailed, even incorporating lore such as Mew being the original ancestor for the majority of Pokemon species.
