Earlier this week, a report emerged that Sony, Xbox, and Nintendo would not be present at this year’s E3 event, marking a historic instance where all three of the major console holders would not be participating in the show.
Although Nintendo has commonly skipped E3 in favor of its own Direct Presentations in the past, it seems their decision to skip this year might be due to more disappointing reasons.
Speaking to their sources, VGC reports that Nintendo is skipping E3 because they have “fewer major releases than usual” to justify participating. This information is further corroborated by IGN’s sources, although they specify that its because Nintendo has a “light second half release schedule”.
VGC
According to VGC’s publishing sources with knowledge of Nintendo’s plans, the company has decided to skip E3 2023 – the event’s first physical show in four years – because it feels it has fewer major releases than usual ready to show and which would justify significant event space.
IGN
VGC has since reported that Nintendo opted not to take part in the event due to a light second half release schedule not justifying the event space — information that IGN can corroborate.
Taken together, its possible Nintendo may not host a Nintendo Direct or make any major announcements at all during this year’s E3 season on account of not having many games launching in 2023. This would be similar to what happened back in 2022, where Nintendo hosted smaller presentations during the E3 period without the expected big Direct.
Stay tuned for more updates as they come.
