During their latest financial results briefing, Nintendo revealed some updated figures showing just how well the Super Mario Bros. Movie did as it closes out its theatrical run.
According to Nintendo’s data, the film was viewed by around 168.10 million people worldwide as of July 30th 2023, netting $1.349 billion dollars at the box office. These figures make it the highest grossing videogame film adaptation of all time, and second highest grossing animated film after Frozen II. Nintendo also notes that the film’s success led to “heightened consumer interest in Super Mario”, leading to higher sales of Mario games and merchandise.
In light of this success, Nintendo has also committed to ” continue their efforts towards visual content-related initiatives”, although whether this will take the form of more movies or other types of media remains vague. Stay tuned for more updates as they come.
