Ubisoft Shutters Another Studio, Lays Off 185 Employees
The past few months have not been kind to Ubisoft, having experienced a string of underperforming games along with a looming threat of buyout.
Ubisoft has now announced they will be closing one of its studios in the UK, Ubisoft Leamington, as well as laying off 185 employees across several of its other offices. This comes just a few months after Ubisoft shut down its studios in San Francisco and Osaka.
Speaking to Eurogamer, the company said this was part of “targeted restructuring” to ensure “long-term stability”.
“As part of our ongoing efforts to prioritise projects and reduce costs that ensure long-term stability at Ubisoft, we have announced targeted restructurings at Ubisoft Düsseldorf, Ubisoft Stockholm and Ubisoft Reflections and the permanent closure of Ubisoft Leamington site, unfortunately, this should impact 185 employees overall. We are deeply grateful for their contributions and are committed to supporting them through this transition.”
That said, Ubisoft still remains an extremely large company, with a headcount of over 18,000 employees as of September 2024. If things continue on this trend however, it is likely we will see even more layoffs in the coming months.
