A few weeks back, a rumor surfaced that Universal, Illumination and Nintendo were deep in talks for a Legend Of Zelda animated film as their next big collaboration after the success of the Super Mario Bros. movie.
Recently, at the Annecy International Animation Festival, The Wrap caught up with Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri and asked him directly whether such a project was in the works. In response, Meledandri seemingly dismissed the idea as just a rumor, although he did say such speculation was natural given the positive relationship Illumination has with Nintendo so far, as well as his position on Nintendo’s Board of Directors.
“I don’t know where that came from, I mean I can understand how people would surmise all sorts of things because obviously, we’ve had a great experience working together. My relationship with Nintendo now includes being on their board of directors, so I understand how people can surmise these things. But in terms of the specifics, that was just something that I’ve been hearing lots of rumors. This is just about what’s next between Nintendo and Illumination.”
Whatever the case, even if there was a Legend Of Zelda movie in discussion behind the scenes, its unlikely that anyone involved will want to share any tidbits before the time is right. Stay tuned for more updates as they come.
