Kagawa Revises Proposed Law Restricting Video Game Play Time For Children

A few weeks ago, lawmakers in Kagawa prefecture were mulling a law to restrict the amount of time children could play video games.

The controversial law, if passed, would impose a 1 hour play limit on weekdays and 90 minutes play limit on weekends and public holidays to those 17 and below.

There were some amendments made to the proposed law before it is presented to the prefecture assembly in February 2020. For example, the scope of the law would also include video games on smartphones and smart devices, not just video game consoles like Nintendo Switch.

Wording for the proposed law previously required everyone in the prefecture to follow it strictly, which meant parents had to enforce it at home. But now the wording has been changed, suggesting that the law is “just a standard/basis” and everyone should “try to follow it” as much as possible.
