Rumor: Activision Was Briefed About Switch Successor Back In December 2022

Earlier this month, Nintendo reportedly showed off the successor to the Nintendo Switch to their partners at Gamescom 2023, seemingly to prepare them for the console’s rumored 2024 launch.

According to TheVerge, it seems Activision got a head’s up about the new console even earlier, back in December 2022 during the legal battle between Microsoft and the FTC to acquire the company.

This information comes from a heavily redacted internal email sent to CEO Bobby Kotick by Chris Schnakenberg, head of Activision’s platform strategy and partner relations. Schnakenberg was sending Kotick documents for a planning meeting with Nintendo’s Shuntaro Furukawa, referring to the unnanounced console as the “NG Switch” (i.e. Next Generation Switch), and describing it as closer to a PS4 and Xbox One in power.

Given the closer alignment to Gen8 platforms in terms of performance and our previous offerings on PS4 / Xbox One, it is reasonable to assume we could make something compelling for the NG Switch as well. It would be helpful to secure early access to development hardware prototypes and prove that out nice and early.

This statement runs somewhat contradictory to previous rumors about the Switch successor, some of which claimed it would be on par with the PS5. Stay tuned for more info as it comes.
