As many are well aware, Nintendo is notoriously protective of its intellectual property, filing numerous high profile takedowns against projects the believe are using their characters or games in ways they deem inappropriate or without their permission.
Now, Nintendo’s latest target seems to be AI generated images. According to a report from TheVerge, a company called Tracer has been filing takedown notices against AI images featuring Mario on X (formerly Twitter), on behalf of Nintendo. These images were created using X’s proprietary AI tool Grok, which allows users to generate AI images through written prompts.
At the time of this writing, Nintendo or Tracer has yet to comment about these takedown notices, making it uncertain whether they are legitimate. That said, it would not be out-of-character for Nintendo to take such actions. One of the alleged takedowns was against an image of Mario smoking a cigarette and drinking beer, which Nintendo would no doubt consider inappropriate.
