In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, many tracks were arranged by composers and musicians hired by Masahiro Sakurai. One of these musicians is the famous Sonic sound director Tomoya Ohtani.
In a recent blog post, Ohtani shared how he arranged Bomb Rush Blush, a track that appeared in Splatoon.
If you’ve never heard Bomb Rush Blush in your life before, here’s the original and Smash Bros. Ultimate versions:
In Ohtani’s blog post, the composer revealed he was very happy to be given the opportunity to work on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, calling it “the biggest festival of collaborations in the video game industry.” He was tasked to pick and arrange songs by director Masahiro Sakurai, sound manager Junichi Nakatsuru, and arrangement supervisor Hiroki Hashimoto.
When Ohtani was asked by the three people why he chose to arrange Bomb Rush Blush, he explained he wanted to try something that younger players are familiar with. But before he settled on Bomb Rush Blush, he didn’t know which Splatoon song to choose and even had thoughts of remixing several melodies into one track.
After informing Sakurai and his team that he wanted to arrange Bomb Rush Blush, he was given approval immediately and was provided the voice audio for the song. He wanted his arrangement to appeal to both Splatoon and Sonic fans. In order to do that, Ohtani increased the pace of the song, while Sakurai did some small retouches after the song was more or less complete. The arrangement had also many other elements and it took lots of hard work to complete them.
