Ahead of the upcoming release of the Super Mario Galaxy Movie in Japan, Nintendo Dream Web has published an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto discussing the film.
In the interview, Miyamoto remarks on the critical response to the film, which was less than stellar in contrast to its box office performance. He also talks about the possibility of certain elements from the film making their way into the games’ canon, which we have hidden past a spoiler warning.
You can read his comments below, translated via Nintendo Patents Watch and GoNintendo:
“Regarding the critics’ reviews of the first film, I remember thinking, ‘they have a point.’ But I figured this time would be different… only to find that the they were even harsher than last time, which I found rather odd. We stepped in from another medium and did our best to help energize the film industry. And yet the very people who are supposed to champion the film industry are the ones being so negative; it’s truly baffling.”
During the interview, Miyamoto was specifically asked whether the new backstory given to Princess Peach in the film would be made canon, to which Miyamoto responded as follows:
Because we don’t know what kind of game we’ll make next with our characters, having too many character settings would become a constraint. I’m fine with being bound by the gameplay, but I don’t want to be bound by having created a story, which has been the reason for not making movies for many years.
So, before making this movie, I hadn’t decided on the character’s background, but now that I’m making the movie, it’s become fun to expand on the character in various ways. Therefore, I would like to adhere as much as possible to the settings created in the movie in future games.
The most major revelation in the film regarding Peach is that she and Rosalina are sisters, a plot point which was previously said to have been cut from the Super Mario Galaxy games. Many believe Miyamoto’s comments mean that this relationship will also be made canon in the games, although we will likely have to wait till the franchise’s next installment to know for certain.
