Several months ago, references to a mysterious product code “OSM” were discovered on the Nintendo Account website, leading many to speculate that a new Switch 2 model was in the works.
Now, we’ve learned that this product code does indeed refer to a new Switch 2 model, but it is not one that fans were expecting. As shared by Nintendo Patents Watch, the product code OSM will be used for the EU exclusive Switch 2 variant designed to have a replaceable battery. This variant was created to comply with new regulations in the EU requiring all portable electronics to have easily replaceable batteries by 2027.

This discovery comes alongside the reveal that Nintendo has filed for four confidential design registrations in the EU region. With this info in mind, it is possible that the new design registrations are for this new OSM Switch 2 model, or for new versions of existing Switch 2 peripherals that also have replaceable batteries.
